Over the past couple of weeks, we have been looking at the different properties of walls and earth materials. We examined several different types of walls and their purposes. We inspected the properties of sand, soil, and clay. The class created tile sandwiches with these materials to test how sticky they were and if they could withstand an earthquake. By combining all of this information, it gave the students an idea of what materials would make the best mortar and what design would make a strong wall that could protect a garden from animals trying to eat the vegetables. This week we have tested the students designs and mortar with a demolition ball. The children had a wonderful time with this experiment and getting their hands dirty. The walls help up surprisingly well and the students were so proud of their designs!
